When Renato’s father (Luis Gerardo Méndez) decides to go to the United States in search of work, he stays behind with the promise that one day his father will return with money to build him a plane.

Years have passed and his father never returned. Renato is now a successful businessman, has a fiancée and a stepson with whom he cannot create deep connections.

For him, parents and children do not need to be best friends. A belief built after suffering from abandonment during his childhood.

Everything changes when Katherine, his father’s current wife, calls him and tells him that he is sick, on the verge of death and wants to see him.

Suddenly, Renato discovers that he has a younger brother named Asher (Connor Del Rio) and the two embark on a journey of self-discovery in search of someone named Eloise.

Is Half-Siblings Good?

This was a movie I chose unpretentiously at 10pm on a Saturday. The phrase I used specifically was “I wanted something to do”.

I am happy to share that, definitely, Stepbrothers was that something. However, there is also a dramatic haze that surrounds the story of these two brothers who had never met.

Focusing on the character dynamics, Renato carries within himself a great resentment towards Uncle Sam. The idea of having to travel to the United States because of a father he doesn’t even love makes him completely angry.

Meanwhile, Asher is a different guy (some say he’s weird), he can’t be serious and says whatever comes to mind.

When they meet for the first time, without knowing who the other is, their interaction leaves a terrible impression. To top it off, Asher tells Renato, a Mexican, that he’s “against the wall.” This makes things even more strange.

The “tense” atmosphere that fills the room when the two are officially introduced at the hospital doesn’t surprise viewers.

Throughout the plot, we can see Asher’s effort to connect with his brother and Renato’s effort to stay as far away as possible. They are opposites and couldn’t be more distant. And if it’s up to Renato alone, they’ll stay that way.

For me, the highlight of this film goes beyond the dynamic between the two main characters. In a not-so-subtle way, the plot manages to expose a deep-rooted prejudice among Americans towards people who are from other countries.

The hatred that Renato carries for the United States comes largely from the fact that his father left when he was a child. But in his brief time trying to understand what happened, he experiences many situations similar to those that kept his father away.

I really like the approach to healing from trauma and how our actions do indeed reflect aspects of these same traumatic events.

Step Brothers is a fun film that makes you laugh and cry, but it is, above all, a film that addresses the personal growth and emotional healing of two adults who were hurt during their childhood, due to a third adult who could not accept his own choices.

It is a film that goes by quickly and is definitely worth watching.

Survival of the Thickest https://e-popcorn.com/survival-of-the-thickest/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=survival-of-the-thickest Mon, 04 Sep 2023 23:03:00 +0000 https://e-popcorn.com/?p=330 Netflix comedy series features plus-size lead and gets some good laughs

O post Survival of the Thickest apareceu primeiro em e-Popcorn.

]]>
Survival of the Thickest premiered on July 13th of this year on Netflix with a premise that seems cliché, but because of the cast and its focus, it gains a special shine.

Mavis Beaumont (Michelle Buteau) is a fashion designer with a lot of personality and dreams. When her stable relationship with the perfect man comes to an end on the eve of a great professional opportunity, she needs to find a way to start over in her life. And with the help of her best friends, she sets out in search of new adventures.

Right from the start, I would like to point out that one of my favorite parts of this series: the character’s best friends have their own stories. They are more than just “friends of the main character” and escape the cliché of the unemployed friend who is always on screen ready to crack a joke.

Marley (Tasha Smith) and Khalil (Tone Bell) have plots that are just as interesting as Mavis. Khalil is the typical scoundrel who ends up falling in love and experiencing romance for the first time, and Marley is discovering/developing more of her sexuality.

And even though it is not as in-depth as the main plot, we can follow a little of each one’s story.

Despite addressing issues such as racism, plus-size women, and having a lot of LGBTQIA+ representation, none of these issues seem forced in the story. On the contrary, they are there adjacent to everything else and are treated with due naturalness.

The comedy itself revolves around Mavis’s discovery and journey of learning to be single. We follow a woman returning to the single life in her early 30s, after a long relationship that didn’t end well.

Here, we follow her disastrous dates, her professional challenges, and her adventures living in a house with someone who is the complete opposite of her.

Jade (Liza Treyger) is an eccentric character, with questionable habits (such as bathing her body in olive oil and sitting on the apartment’s furniture) and a cat affectionately called Cocaine.

Her character comes as a contrast to the normality of Mavis’ life, the change from a stable life to a messy apartment and an even messier roommate.

Image: Netflix

As for Mavis’ love life, when I started the series, when I got to know the dynamics between her and Khalil, I was afraid of being led to “ship” the two for the sake of plot convenience. In shows with plus-size characters, this is already a cliché: “the chubby friend who ends up being seen as a woman by her long-time friend”.

Fortunately, the tone is quickly set; the two are friends, they care a lot about each other and would do anything for each other, but that’s it.

There’s no room for romance; on the contrary, each one really roots for the other’s love life and there are no secrets between them. Khalil is Mavis’ best friend, almost like a brother, but there’s nothing more to it than that. Which makes the love between them even more genuine.

Image: Netflix

As for her ex, Jacques, he still wants to reconcile the relationship and chases after Mavis for a good part of the series. Despite being the reason for the breakup, he wants to prove to her that he can’t live without her and that he has now changed into a better person.

There is a slight “love triangle” when we are introduced to Luca, an Italian with a sense of humor and an accent that takes our main character’s breath away.

In the end, Surviving in Style is a series that shares with the viewer the daily life of a woman in normal situations of her day to day life.

And yes, despite being a mid-size/plus-size woman, there is never a mention of insecurity due to her body, Mavis is a very confident woman, men compliment her and flirt with her.

In works with the same theme, a common mistake is to always reduce the character to this, being fat is who she is and nothing else matters. Fortunately, this is another cliché avoided by Surviving in Style.

Surviving in Style is a quick series, easy to binge-watch and with great moments to make you laugh. The series is available on Netflix and has 8 episodes.

For now, there is no confirmation of a new season and Michelle Buteau, the actress who plays Mavis and author of the book of the same name, made it clear that she will not consider the idea of another season until the rights of the writers are respected and the strikes in Hollywood end.

Whoever has never watched a movie and been outraged by a character’s behavior, let them cast the first stone.

When it comes to putting ourselves in the actors’ shoes, we are sure that we would do better. But would we really?

Following the footsteps of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018), Netflix has just added an interactive romance to its catalog called “Choose Love”.

Here we can define the fate of Cami Conway (Laura Marano) and help her choose between 3 love interests: Paul (Scott Michael Foster), her current boyfriend, Rex (Avan Jogia), a musical star, and Jack (Jordi Webber), an old love from her teenage years.

But is ‘Choose Love’ good?

To answer this question, we first need to consider what was promised to us.

The interactive factor is there and we can directly choose the main character’s actions.

So, saying that you didn’t like the ending would be the same as saying that you hated a Subway sandwich that you put together and chose each of the ingredients, right?

Maybe! But beyond our choices, we can also talk about the construction of the plot.

Yes, our choices are important, but if we ignore the fact that we pressed a button here and there, would that script make sense if it were delivered that way?

I question each of these things before expressing my opinion, because I want to raise a debate about our interference and to what extent it becomes relevant.

After all, all the paths are pre-constructed and we are only choosing “right or left”. That said, let’s go to the movie!

The first scene of this film serves as a good summary of everything that will happen. Our main character, Cami, consults a fortune teller and the cards show how her life will have several twists and turns, and everything will depend on the choices she makes along the way. There is also a breaking of the fourth wall that is done several times in other moments of the film, enough to show how we will be brought into the film and indicate that the character knows that we are in control.

The central point of this twist is in her love life. In a stable relationship for 3 years, Cami still feels that something is missing in her life. And if it depends on what the cards say, soon there will be something left: suitors.

Minutes after being introduced to her long-time boyfriend and the relationship dynamics between Paul and Cami, we meet Jack. Jack is an old love of Cami’s. They dated during their adolescence and he left for Guatemala to help people. Now he is back and, by coincidence of fate, works at Cami’s niece’s school. Our third suitor is introduced a few scenes later. One of his songs is being mixed in the studio where Cami works and in a “meet-cute” she helps him make coffee in a complicated coffee maker.

Part of a good romance lies in the chemistry between characters and actors, unfortunately, in this film it is a little difficult to see that chemistry.

There are three possibilities and none of them seem interesting enough for us to get invested in the moment of choosing. None of the couples are convincing enough.

For me, of all of them, the one that interested me the least was Jack. Their first meeting is not convincing enough for me to want to see more of the interaction between the two.

That said, as a big fan of Austin and Ally, I took advantage of my opportunity to pair Laura Marano with a blond singer in a red jacket (who knows, he knows lol).

To see which one was more worthwhile, I did the 6 endings and I can say that the feeling we were left with is the same as Cami had at the beginning of the film: something is missing.

The film does not seem to be well-structured, which leaves some gaps that give us the feeling of an empty plot.

We also don’t care enough about the characters to celebrate any change.

And to top it off, some endings are so quick to reach that it almost seems like a joke.

The conflict is not convincing in the plot. My experience is that they focused too much on the choices of the character who was least interesting to me, and so when I reached my ending, it felt rushed and thrown together.

In conclusion

This is an average movie that offers an average experience.

If the future of streaming cinema is interactivity, then the writers need to find ways to better tie together the consequences of choices and make the plot complete.

For now, it’s just a little “fun”, a concept of: wow, I can make my own movie.

But I ask again: can it really be done?

They Cloned Tyrone https://e-popcorn.com/they-cloned-tyrone/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=they-cloned-tyrone Wed, 16 Aug 2023 10:39:00 +0000 https://e-popcorn.com/?p=319 And I still don't quite understand who Tyrone is!

O post They Cloned Tyrone apareceu primeiro em e-Popcorn.

]]>
You know when you’re looking for something to watch and you scroll through a streaming service for minutes, until you give up and press play on the first thing that comes up?

That’s how I ended up watching “They Cloned Tyrone.” I confess that the name was the first thing that made me curious.

In the story, Fontaine (John Boyega) lives the same routine every day. He lives with his mother – who he never sees, because she’s always locked in her room -, sells drugs around the neighborhood and is a lone wolf.

One night, when he goes to a hotel to collect debts from the city’s pimp (Jamie Foxx), Fontaine is shot inside his car and left for dead.

Things get even stranger when he wakes up the next day with no memory of what happened and no injuries.

Fontaine decides to investigate how he’s still alive after everything that happened and ends up discovering a government project that uses the neighborhood where he lives as guinea pigs for chemical tests in broad daylight.

Eles Clonaram o Tyrone é bom?

The beginning of the film may mislead the viewer, the formula seems hackneyed, after all, we have “Happy Death Day” and countless other films that have time loops as their central theme.

But it doesn’t take long for the film to show its tone and have its first plot twist (which is already present in the title).

The investigation and the attempt to find out why people are being cloned is the central part of the film, it’s what makes the journey of Yo Yo (Teyonah Perris), Slick (Foxx) and Fontaine so interesting.

With moments of humor and drama, the film has a good balance in tone, without getting lost in the development.

The way they deal with conspiracy theories here also adds even more value to the script. After all, who doesn’t want to know what interest the government has in controlling people?

The film is average and aims to make you think about the treatment that peripheral neighborhoods receive in society, but at the same time, this discussion gets lost amidst the almost satirical comedy.

The mix of comedy and science fiction, combined with the attempt to address a social issue, makes the film a confusing mess, with peaks that vary between laughter and thoughts of pity for one or more characters.

It’s worth playing They Cloned Tyrone, because the film is edited in a way that almost doesn’t allow us to see time passing, its pace is not slow and the story is very interesting and good for making us laugh.

Just don’t go in expecting very deep social criticism, tear-jerking drama and exaggerated laughter.

They Cloned Tyrone is a Netflix original film and is now available to watch.

Rory Culkin | Hollywood’s Best Lunatic https://e-popcorn.com/rory-culkin-hollywoods-best-lunatic/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rory-culkin-hollywoods-best-lunatic Tue, 04 Jul 2023 09:18:00 +0000 https://e-popcorn.com/?p=273 Is Rory Culkin the best actor to play religious fanatics on movies?

O post Rory Culkin | Hollywood’s Best Lunatic apareceu primeiro em e-Popcorn.

]]>
Born on July 21, 1989, Rory Culkin is the youngest of 7 siblings. For a long time, his career was limited to playing younger versions of his brothers Kieran Culkin and Macaulay Culkin.

In 2000, he made his film debut as Rudy Prescott in the film “Stand by Me”, alongside Mark Ruffalo (Avengers) and Laura Linney (Ozark).

Two years later, Culkin played Morgan Hess in the film “Signs” written and produced by M. Knight Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), where he became known for the classic scene with the tinfoil helmet.

Image: Touchstone Pictures

With films like Scream 4 (2011) and Lord of Chaos (2018) under his belt, a path was naturally traced in his career. Where, little by little, in horror films, Culkin gained prominence with roles where “madness” needs to be highlighted.

Rory Culkin on Under the banner of heaven

Image: IMDB

The 2022 series is set in the investigation into the murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty and her baby. In the suburbs of Salt Lake Valley, Utah, investigator Jeb Pyre struggles to find the culprits of such brutality, while trying to maintain faith in his religion.

In this series, Rory Culkin plays Samuel Lafferty, one of Ammon Lafferty’s sons. Sam is loyal to his brothers and tries to protect his family at all costs. In his speeches, he shows several times that he is ready to be “sacrificed” for the greater good.

In addition to the perfect characterization created by the production of Under the Banner of Heaven, Rory also delivers a lot in his performance. Perhaps it is due to his wide eyes, the projected speech or the body posture that indicates that he is ready to attack at any moment, the actor makes it clear the potential he has to project fanaticism and “madness” to the screen.

(I tried to find videos to illustrate, but all the videos available on Tik Tok were edited with music and sensual effects, which were very questionable)

In Brazil you can watch Under the banner of heaven on the Star+ streaming platform.

Rory Culkin on Black Mirror, season 6

The episode Beyond the Sea, season six of Black Mirror (available on Netflix), has space travel as its backdrop and introduces us to a “tool” developed so that astronauts can live their domestic lives alongside their families, while traveling in space.

With the option of transporting their consciousness to their doppelgangers who are on Earth, the characters Cliff Stanfield (Aaron Paul) and David Ross (Josh Hartnett) can live their daily lives in two different realities.

When David’s house is invaded by a sect that cannot accept his existence as something natural on Earth, he can do little to defend his family. And this is where our main character comes into action.

In the series, Rory does not have much prominence. His character, Kappa, only serves to kick off the main plot of this episode.

However, in the few scenes he appears, once again, he manages to convey all the nuances of his fanaticism in his beliefs.

Although both characters are driven by the same force, religious fanaticism/belief, when watching both series, it is clear that each character was thought and developed differently and Rory does not fail to convey this in front of the cameras.

If there is a genre exclusively dedicated to religious fanatics, the youngest of the Culkins can certainly be cast in several roles and play them all masterfully.

I don’t think he is ideal only for these types of roles, but after having watched so much of his work in a short period of time, I decided to write about the excellence in which Rory Culkin plays lunatics in the movies.

Without a doubt, the best lunatic in recent times.

A Love Called Christmas Movies https://e-popcorn.com/a-love-called-christmas-movies/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-love-called-christmas-movies Tue, 06 Dec 2022 09:19:00 +0000 https://e-popcorn.com/?p=225 There is something extremely captivating about mega colorful movies, with cliché stories, predictable endings, bad acting and… Santa Claus

O post A Love Called Christmas Movies apareceu primeiro em e-Popcorn.

]]>
It’s December, and we can already hear the Christmas bells ringing in the distance. Santa Claus is already in the shopping malls, the squares are decorated with items that remind us of snow and winter, even though in Brazil, the average temperature for the end of the year is sunny.

The jokes about pavê or ‘cumê’ are already being rehearsed by the most inconvenient uncles, we are ready to put on our best clothes, sit on the living room couch and wait for hours for the clock to strike midnight. Ah, the smell of Christmas…

With all this ambiance, my favorite part of the end of year festivities also happens: all the streaming platforms are full of cliché movies, with average acting, the same script with different names, positive messages and a glow that only a Christmas movie can bring us.

If throughout the year I already enjoy and joke about being a fan of bad movies (in the eyes of film critics, of course!), in December we are given the license to have bad taste.

From kisses in the snow to journalists invading castles, or, who knows, time-traveling gentlemen, spoiled rich girls being sent to a place far from the big city, there is something about these movies that pleases me more than expected.

Maybe it is the atmosphere created around such a special date, or maybe it is simply the fact that since childhood, I have always found myself binge-watching Christmas movies in the afternoon session… something has made me loyal to this habit of always having space in my schedule for any dubious movie released in November or December.

What about Christmas 2022?

This year, we have a list that includes Lindsay Lohan (The Parent Trap) in “A Christmas Crush”, Justin Hartley (This is Us) in “The Santa Diaries” and Freddie Prinze Jr. (I Know What You Did Last Summer) in “Christmas with You” to binge-watch on Netflix.

For Christmas movies that feature LGBTQIA+ representation, we have “A Christmas Crush” on Netflix and “Someone Tell Me?”, starring Kristen Stewart, available on Amazon Prime.

It’s time to rewatch one of my favorite Christmas movies, one that touched me so deeply that since its release I have found myself OBLIGATED to watch it before December 25th.

I’m talking about “Klaus”, a movie released by Netflix in 2019, winner of 7 Annie Awards categories.

Image: Netflix

With captivating and funny characters, Klaus tells us a new and improved version of the emergence of the good old man who is now popular with most children around the world.

I can say that, despite being recent, this has become one of my favorite Christmas movies, and if you haven’t watched it yet, it’s definitely worth it!

The platform had already acquired some smaller studios, but this time it decided to be bold and invest a little more to start from scratch.

Amir Rahimi says that the intention is to develop games that are, loosely translated, “original and engaging, without ads or items to be purchased within the platform”.

The project is in its early stages and there is no release date set. According to Rahimi, developing a game can take years, but the company is excited to share what’s coming with its subscribers.

This Friday (6), a new documentary miniseries about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer will be released on Netflix.

Entitled “Talking to a Serial Killer: The Milwaukee Cannibal”, the documentary will follow the same format as those already produced about Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy.

While in the series we have an “illustration” of the events, here we will hear and see real interviews with Dahmer about the crimes that occurred between 1978 and 1991.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

The series, which premiered on Netflix on September 21, continues to be a topic of discussion among viewers.

This is because, while many are shocked by the crimes and atrocities committed by Dahmer, others show their support and even declare that they feel “sorry” for the killer on social media.

The series has become one of the most watched on Netflix and has 10 episodes with an average duration of 50 minutes.
